Karey Iron is a public health epidemiologist working at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. She uses huge amounts of data to evaluate the effectiveness of medical care in Ontario, and the health of people in Ontario. “Epidemiology is the study of diseases in populations over place and time, and it’s a discipline to improve health.” Karey says she likes three things about her hidden gem career. “First, I have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of people from a many disciplines — physicians, nurses, data analysts, project managers, policy makers,  health care planners — and we all work toward improving health and the health system. Second, I’m a curious person, so daily I get to work with people to solve problems… Third, I’ve created a flexible work environment, and that makes my work and life balance much better.”
